The Provincial Government of Isabela convened experts, public servants, Indigenous Peoples’ Mandatory Representatives (IPMRs), and representatives from academic and non-governmental organizations in Gamu, Isabela from August 26–28 for a three-day seminar-workshop on advancing coastal and marine governance.

Isabela Coastal Development Officer Gretchen F. Valdez said the event, titled “Connecting the Coast,” aimed to link stakeholders, build capacities for science-based decision-making, and transform insights into actionable strategies.

“The seminar-workshop aims to connect stakeholders for stronger collaboration and partnership; orient participants on policies, insights, and best practices; assess coastal challenges; strengthen capacities for inclusive, science-based decision-making; and transform insights into sustainable solutions,” Valdez said.

Resource speakers from the University of the Philippines, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippine Coast Guard, Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines, Earth Island Institute, and other institutions delivered sessions on maritime law, participatory planning, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

Community leaders and grassroots organizations complemented the technical presentations with discussions on practical challenges and local solutions in coastal management.

A highlight of the seminar was the presentation of the Isabela Coastal Primer by Valdez—a consolidated reference on ecosystems, communities, and governance structures that will guide future planning and decision-making.
The seminar also highlighted key provincial government initiatives and projects, such as mangrove conservation, oyster and mussel culture programs, and support for local fisheries, showcasing how policy, science, and community knowledge are being applied on the ground.

The activity concluded with the signing of a commitment wall, symbolizing participants’ shared pledge to work together for the sustainable development of Isabela’s coastal areas.  Isabela PIO
